Tutoring

With years of teaching and tutoring experience, CPC offers two-hour tutoring sessions that are  customized to the student’s needs.

ED1) “Write a Winning Essay” session covers essay types (argumentative, expository, persuasive, and  creative), examples, and formulas for success. The student leaves session with a solid working draft.

ED2) “Not the Creative Type” Artful Prose Workshop: How to brainstorm and find inspiration for      any English assignment. Student should bring ideas, assignments, or projects that will evolve into creative works.

ED3) “I Can’t Read This!” Close and distant reading session for academic projects.  Through development of  comprehension, analysis, and interpretation, students understand how to better inform their writing based on assigned reading.

ED4) “I’m More of a Math Person” Literary and Composition Essentials Basic tools and techniques for students not fond of writing. Student writes and revises an essay (either a student assignment or CPC curriculum) to completion during this session.

ED5) “Shakespeare Says What?” Survey of English and American Literature: Basic literary terms, textual  analysis, interpretation,  and paper-writing basics, as well as a brief literary history on the major movements in British and American literature.

ED6) “Rhyming and Stealing” Poetry Basics Session covers terminology, analysis, interpretation, and paper-writing basics. Students write a brief analysis and interpretation of a poem during the session.

Master Classes

These tutoring sessions are specifically designed for college preparatory and lower division English students.  Students should have working knowledge of literary themes and terminology, as well as essay writing in its basic academic forms.

MC1) “Under the Gun” Thesis, Research, and the Timed Essay For serious academic writers who want to succeed in their timed essays, this session explores refining and honing a succinct argument, anticipating essay writing prompts, and time management. Student will be given a thirty-minute timed essay both at the beginning as well as at end of the session to check understanding and practice timing writing.

MC2) “The Fundamentals of Writing an Academic Research Paper” Research methodology,  basic components of long-form research projects, self-edit checklist, citing sources in MLA style.

MC3) Writing a Powerful Personal Statement for College Admissions ”Do’s” and “Don’ts,” statement organization, outlining, research. The student leaves session with a solid working draft.

MC4) “The Comb Through” The Special Project Review Full critique and suggestions for revisions. Prior to the one-hour face-to-face revision session,  the student submits the project for a one-hour edit by Cynthia.
